CROP INSURANCE
In the past, reporting of acreages for crop insurance purposes could be a time-consuming,
confusing process. Acreage estimates were usually pulled from FSA aerial photographs.
In order to do this, growers had to figure out the township, range, and
section they were in, then get the FSA tract number of their fields in
order to figure out which photo to look at. In most cases, these
photos were not updated to take into account changes in management on the
ground. Once the proper fields were identified, the accuracy of the
acreage estimates could be called into question. Fields were often
miss-identified, or left off of acreage reports all together.
In order to streamline this process,
Harvest GeoGraphics is excited to offer our services to the crop insurance
industry. The RMA has recently approved the use of GIS and GPS technology
in the measuring of fields for crop insurance purposes. The following
press releases detail the RMA's blessing of this technology, and, in fact,
encourage its widespread acceptance.

Harvest GeoGraphics is able to collect large amounts of sub-meter accuracy field boundary data using our
Trimble PRO XRS GPS receiver mounted on a Polaris ATV platform. We
can then put that data directly onto acreage reports to be completed by
the grower. By presenting the information in graphic map outline
format, farmers can easily identify their fields and write crop information
directly onto the report.
Once the initial field mapping takes place,
the data can easily be updated and used year after year. If field
boundaries change, new readings can be taken and the information can be
updated to reflect the changes. |
